Why Seeing Shame Might Be A Little Weird For Me
The upcoming film Shame has several trailers out. It looks great and has been getting a lot of positive coverage from film critics who have seen it already. I plan on seeing it.
But the trailers. I think all of them feature a pretty woman who gives a certain look to Michael Fassbender during some sort of celebration scene. Here’s an example, she can be seen at the 0:25 mark.
Now, for some reason, this woman looks really, really familiar. And until the other day, I hadn’t figured it out: She went to college with me. She was even in my freshman orientation group.
She was pretty famous on campus because she’s pretty, I guess. She did a couple Maxim photoshoots (one wearing Fordham gear because it was decided she was a “Campus Cutie”), and I remember an acquaintance having a cut-out picture of her on his common room wall. I think she was holding hot dogs with lightly applied dollops of mustard.
One time we were at the same bar—the one near campus that offered dollar mugs on Wednesday nights—after her Fordham-gear shoot, which I found out about because one of my townie friends from Chicago told me there was a Fordham girl in Maxim. I told her this story and she laughed. Then I asked, “Seems kind of weird though, right?” Or something like that. She didn’t know what I meant.
I talked about how Maxim is really gross and, like, just go for it, or whatever if you’re a magazine, right? And why are you objectifying yourself like that? This isn’t that bad a school, you have to be sort of smart, blah blah blah.
She said it was fun to be in Maxim. I said “I don’t believe you” and we stopped talking. I don’t think we ever talked again to tell the truth.
Well she showed me.
What a world!
